Articulation
The site where two or more bones meet.
Synovial Joint
A type of joint characterized by a fluid-filled joint capsule allowing free movement.
Fibrous Joint
A joint where bones fit closely together, allowing no movement.
Endochondral Ossification
A process of bone formation where cartilage is replaced by bone; examples include long bones.
Osteoblast
A bone cell responsible for the creation of bone tissue.
Menisci
Pads of fibrocartilage located between articulating bones in synovial joints.
Bursae
Sacs filled with synovial fluid that cushion joints and facilitate movement.
Diarthroses
Freely movable joints classified functionally.
Amphiarthroses
Slightly movable joints classified functionally.
Synarthroses
Immovable joints classified functionally.
Suture
A fibrous joint found only in the skull with bone edges interlocking.
Condyloid Joint
A synovial joint where a condyle fits into an elliptical socket, allowing movement in two planes.
Ball and Socket Joint
The most movable joint type where a ball-shaped head of one bone fits into a concave socket.
Gliding Joint
A nonaxial joint with flat articular surfaces allowing limited gliding movement.
Hinge Joint
A uniaxial joint that allows movement only in one plane, allowing flexion and extension.
Pivot Joint
A uniaxial joint where a bone rotates around another bone, allowing rotational movement.
Angular Movements
Movements that change the angle between articulating bones, including flexion and extension.
Supination
The rotation of the forearm so the palm faces upward.
Pronation
The rotation of the forearm so the palm faces downward.
Inversion
Turning the sole of the foot inward.
Eversion
Turning the sole of the foot outward.
