convert grams to moles by dividing by the amu of the element
identify which value is the smallest, then divide all values by that value
ensure whole numbers

will be given the molar mass of a compound
find the molar mass of the empirical formula (subscript x amu +…)
Molar mass/molar mass of empirical compound
Multiply the empirical formula by the ratio obtained from above
