Drives
Internal states that push a person into action to satisfy a need or drive.
Physiological Needs
An internal body condition that has deviated from a physiological set point, creating a deficit.
Homeostasis
The state of steady internal conditions maintained by living organisms.
Redintegration
The process by which an environmental stimulus activates a psychological need.
Self-determination theory
Theory that focuses on satisfying needs for autonomy, competence, relatedness, and self-esteem.
Belongingness hypothesis
The need to develop and maintain enduring, positive, and significant relationships with other people.
Self-esteem
How we value and perceive ourselves based on our opinions and beliefs.
Motive to achieve success (Ms)
The disposition to engage in task-oriented behavior or achievement behavior characterized by surpassing standards of excellence.
Motive to avoid failure (Maf)
Inhibits a person from attempting achievement tasks; characterized by anxiety and fear of failing.
Consequences of Unfulfilled Needs
Failure to satisfy psychological needs can be detrimental to psychological health and well-being.
