What is endosymbiosis?
Endosymbiosis is a relationship in which one species lives inside another, and in this case was a positive mutualistic relationship.

A bacterial cell was taken up by an archaeal cell and evolved into the mitochondrion.
How did chloroplasts originate?
A cyanobacterium was taken up by a eukaryotic cell and evolved into the chloroplast.
What evidence supports the endosymbiotic theory?
Mitochondria and chloroplasts have circular DNA, replicate by binary fission, use their own ribosomes similar to bacterial ribosomes, and have two membranes.
