Meninges
Connective tissue membranes that cover and protect the CNS, contain cerebrospinal fluid, and form partitions in the skull.
Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF)
A liquid that cushions the brain and spinal cord, reducing weight by 97% and protecting them from trauma.
Blood Brain Barrier
A protective mechanism that maintains a stable environment for the brain, preventing harmful substances from entering.
Dura Mater
The outermost layer of the meninges, a tough protective membrane that surrounds the brain and spinal cord.
Arachnoid Mater
The middle meninx that forms a loose covering of the brain, separated from the dura mater by a space filled with cerebrospinal fluid.
Pia Mater
The innermost layer of the meninges, a delicate membrane that clings tightly to the surface of the brain and contains many tiny blood vessels.
Hydrocephalus
A condition caused by an accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the ventricles of the brain, leading to increased intracranial pressure.
Cerebrovascular Accidents (CVAs)
Commonly known as strokes, these occur when blood flow to a brain area is disrupted, causing brain tissue to die.
Concussion
A temporary alteration in brain function resulting from a blow to the head, which can produce dizziness or loss of consciousness.
Encephalitis
Inflammation of the brain, which can be caused by infection or other factors, potentially leading to serious complications.
