Resume Contact Section
Should be at the top of your resume and include your first and last name, address, email address and phone number; should stand out from the rest of your resume so potential employers don't have to search for it.
Resume Profile
A quick snippet of your skills and experience as it relates to the specific job you are applying for; modify each time you apply for a different position.
Resume Objective
Example: 'To secure a position as a marketing manager with a reputable organization where I can utilize my extensive marketing training and skills.'
Resume Summary
One to two sentences or a list that outlines your top skills, experience and achievements as they relate to the position you are applying for.
Education (Resume)
Outlines your educational background, academic achievements, and awards; include college name, degrees completed, and honors earned.
Skills (Resume)
Specific skills relevant to the job; include computer skills, technical skills, and soft skills.
Optional Resume Sections
Awards/Achievements, Languages, Community Service, Hobbies.
Job Application Letter
A standalone document to express interest in an open position, highlighting achievements and skills to get the hiring manager's attention; explains why they should ask you in for an interview and highlights key qualifications that make you a fit for the role.
Job Application Letter Format
Professional format with single spacing, one-inch margins, left alignment; professional font (Times New Roman, 10-12 points); keep to one page.
Job Application Letter Heading
Formal business heading: Your name and contact information, the date, and the company name and address.
Addressing the Hiring Manager
Address the letter to the person reviewing applications with a common business greeting like “Dear Mr./Ms.” and their last name.
Job Interview Preparation
Research the company and interviewers, practice answers to common questions, reread the job description, use the STAR method.
STAR Method
Situation, Task, Action, Result - a method for answering interview questions.
During the Interview
Arrive early, make a great first impression, treat everyone with respect, practice good manners and body language, respond truthfully, tie answers back to your skills, keep answers concise.
After the Interview
Ask about next steps, send a personalized thank you letter.
