Osmosis
the movement of water across a selectively permeable membrane from an area of low solute concentration to high solute concentration.
Isotonic solute concentration
equal inside and outside
Isotonic water movement
water moves in and out equally
isotonic effect on cell
Animal cells: stay the same (ideal condition)
Plant cells: becomes flaccid may wilt slightly
Hypertonic effect on cell
Animal cells: cell shrinks and crenates
Plant cells: plasmolysis
Hypotonic effect on cell
Animal cells: cells swell and may burst (lysis)
Plant cells: plant cells become turgid (firm)
Solute
substance dissolved (ex: salt or sugar)
solvent
substance that does the dissolving (usually water)
Tonicity
the ability of a solution to cause water movement
selective permeability
only certain substances can pass through the membrane
