Osmosis

the movement of water across a selectively permeable membrane from an area of low solute concentration to high solute concentration.

Plant cells: becomes flaccid may wilt slightly

Hypertonic effect on cell

Animal cells: cell shrinks and crenates

Plant cells: plasmolysis

Hypotonic effect on cell

Animal cells: cells swell and may burst (lysis)

Plant cells: plant cells become turgid (firm)

Solute

substance dissolved (ex: salt or sugar)

solvent

substance that does the dissolving (usually water)

Tonicity

the ability of a solution to cause water movement

selective permeability

only certain substances can pass through the membrane
