Phonemes

The smallest individual sound in any language
For example the word Dog has 3 ___ D/O/G

Morphemes

refers to a basic unit of meaning, is the smallest part of a word that still has its own independent meaning (for example, “words” has two _____, “word” and “s”)

Syntax

The aspect of grammar that refers to the rules used to put words in the correct order in a sentence
ex.

in English the sentence ”the white duck” the adjective comes before the word

but in Spanish “el pato banco” the adjective comes after the word

Semantic

The component of language that provides both the meaning of the words and how words combine to form meaning

Language Acquisition

the process by which humans acquire the ability to comprehend and produce language, either as their first or second (third, etc.) language

One-word stage

when children communicate using single words that often convey simple complex ideas. typically from 10-18 months old

Telegraphic speech

Involves the first multi-word speech consisting of two or three-word expressions. Typically from 18-30 months

Overgeneralization

a characteristic error when learning a language in which individuals apply grammatical rules too broadly
