Test tube
A tube-shaped piece of glassware or plastic used for holding substances during experiments.
Test tube rack
A wooden, plastic, or metal stand that holds a larger number of test tubes.
Test tube brush
a long, thin brush used to clean test tubes after use.
Watch glass
a rounded piece of glass. It can be used as an evaporating dish for very small amounts of liquid.
Digital scale
measure the mass of a substance.
scoopula
a slim metal scoop used to transfer solids.
weighing paper
used for weighing powered solids. Place the weighing paper on the scale, zero the scale, then add the solids on top of the weighing paper.
burette
a long graduated object that is used to take and move very precise amounts of liquid
Graduated cylinder
a circular piece of plastic or glass that is used to measure the amount of liquid
pipette and pump
used to measure exact volumes of liquid. Sometimes pipettes are marked with graduations. Pipettes are much more precise than graduated cylinders. Liquid must be drawn using a pump.
Volumetric flask
a pear-shaped flask with a flat bottom and a long skinny neck. This type of flask has been calibrated to contain a precise volume at a particular temperature. The neck of the flask has an etched marking that indicates volume of liquid contained when filled to that point.
Wash bottle
a plastic squeeze bottle with a narrow spout on one side it is filled with a distilled water to rinse solids out of a container to add controlled amounts of water to test tubes graduated cylinders or other small containers
Filter paper
used with a funnel to separate a solid from a liquid. Make it into a taco and then to a slice of pizza then look at all the edges of paper and pull three edges to one side to form a cone and to make sure it dosen’t use a wash bottle to wet down the inside of the filter.
funnel
a cone shaped piece of glass used to pour liquids or other substances into a container.
Erlenmeyr flask
A piece of glassware with a wide circular base and a narrow neck. It is used as a container for liquids. Its shape allows for easy and safe swirling of a liquid without the liquid splashing over the top. Not used to measure volume.
Hot plate
a small, portable appliance used for heating or cooking food, typically powered by electricity. It's a convenient alternative to a traditional stove
Stirring rod
typically refers to a glass rod used for stirring liquids particularly in laboratory settings. These rods are made of borosilicate glass which is resistant to thermal shock and chemicals making them suitable for stirring hot and cold solutions
beaker tongs
Used for picking up a hot beaker. They have curved arms usually coated in rubber to prevent chipping the glassware.
Beaker
A cylindrical glass container, used for holding liquid and mixing substances. Not for accurately measuring volume.
Utility clamp
A clamp that is used to hold a test tube or Erlenmeyer flask above the lab table/equipment. This can also be attached to the ring stand for use.
Crucible
Is a dish used in performing chemical reactions and chemical analysis. They can withstand very high temperatures in a Bunsen burden flame or an oven
Clay triangle
Is used to support a crucible on a ring stand for heating with a Bunsen burner. A clay triangle can also be used to support a funnel on the iron ring of a ring stand during filtration.
Crucible tongs
Tongs that are used for picking up the crucible when heated.
Bunsen Burner
Produces flame to heat things in the lab, receiving fuel via a tube connected to a gas outlet. To light, make sure the nozzle at base is open and clear, then turn the knob on the gas outlet to 90 degrees then use a striker to light.
Striker
A striker is used to create a spark to ignite the gas coming from a Bunsen burner. Place the striker over the source of the gas and squeeze the handle.
Ring stand and ring
A support structure with a heavy metal base. Used to hold a beaker or crucible above a bunsen burner. The ring is attached to ring stand and can be moved up and down. Wire gauze is placed untop of the iron ring to support beaker or crucible.
Wire gauze
a square piece of metal mesh used to support a beaker on an iron ring. You can also set hot glassware on top of the wire gauze on your lab table for cooling.
pH meter
Electronic device used for measuring the pH of a liquid.
Thermometer
used to measure the temperature of solids, liquids, or gases. Temperatures can be recorded in degrees fahrenheit, celsius, or Kelvin. It is important to note which scale on the thermometer.
Transfer pipette
a disposable plastic dropper made of translucent plastic. They are used for transferring small amounts of water.
Well plate
a plastic tray with multiple wells that are used to hold and mix small amounts of chemicals. The rows are labeled with letters and the columns are labeled with numbers so that each wall can be identified.
