What are conservative forces?
Those forces for which we can define a potential energy
A potential energy can be defined such that the total mechanical energy is conserved
As the block falls and BEFORE it strikes the spring:
KE increasing, GPE decreasing, SPE constant
AFTER the block strikes the spring but BEFORE it comes to rest:
KE decreasing, GPE decreasing, SPE increasing
AFTER the block behind to move back upward, but still in CONTACT with the spring:
KE increasing, GPE increasing, SPE decreasing
AFTER the block begins to move back upward and no longer in contact with the spring:
KE increasing, GPE increasing, SPE constant
