Levels of Consciousness
AVPU
AVPU stands for
Alert, Verbal, Pain, Unresponsive
Four Questions for Patient
1. What is your name?
2. Where are you at?
3. What day of the week is it?
4. Who is the president?
When to call 9-1-1
1. Unresponsive
2. Responds only to painful stimuli
3. Altered mental status
Airway
Is the patient's airway clear?
Breathing
1. Observe chest rise and fall.
2. Observe body position.
3. Listen for wheezing.
If person has difficulty breathing and is awake
Help them remain calm and coach their breathing.
If a person is unconscious and not breathing
Rescue breaths with pocket mask
Circulation-Abnormal Skin
Dry, clammy, pale, cyanotic, red, yellow
For patient with no pulse
1. Verbal: Are you ok?
2. Painful: Shoulder pinch or sternum rub
3. Resources: Direct someone to call 911. Direct someone to get an AED.
4. Check pulse: Carotid artery
5. CPR: Start CPR and activate AED usage.

CPR-What to look for
Look for full chest recoil
Signs of a diabetic emergency
Changes in level of consciousness, changes in mood, rapid breathing and pulse, feeling and looking ill, dizziness and headache, confusion.
Signs of cardiac emergency
Crushing, stabbing pain that may radiate to arms, back, or neck
For Panic Attacks
1. Put patient in quiet place with minimal noise.
2. Maintain a calm and collected voice.
3. Coach breathing.
4. Grounding techniques and muscle relaxation.
For alcohol/drug/opioid poisoning
1. Call EMS immediately.
2. Ask alertness questions if patient is conscious.
3. Put in recovery position.
4. Keep patient warm.
Indicators of opioid overdose
Pinpointed pupils
Heat Exhaustion Symptoms
1. Faint/dizzy
2. excessive sweating
3. Cool, pale, clammy skin
4. Rapid, weak pulse
5. Muscle cramps
Heat exhaustion treatment
1. Get them to a cool, air conditioned place
2. Give them water if conscious
3. have them take a cool shower or use cold compresses
Heat Stroke Symptoms
1. Throbbing headache
2. no sweating
3. Read, hot, dry skin
4. Rapid, strong pulse
5. may lose consciousness
