Where does respiration take place?

* Mitochondria
* Different cells contain different amounts
* Muscle cells carry out lots of respiration → have lots of mitochondria

What is glucose?

* Carbohydrate
* Digestion breaks down food into small molecules, releasing glucose molecules
* Absorbed by small intestine → diffused into bloodstream

How is glucose transported around the body and what happens to it there?

* Transported in blood
* Dissolves in plasma (liquid part of blood)
* Dissoved glucose diffuses into cells
* Used for respiration

How does oxygen get into cells?

* Carried by red blood cells → contain haemoglobin (substance making blood red)
* Oxygen joins to haemoglobin
* Carried around in blood vessels
* When it reaches a cell requiring oxygen, diffuses into it

How does carbon dioxide leave the body?

* When you exhale
* carbon dioxide produced in respiration diffuses out of cells → into blood plasma
* Blood transports it to lungs
* Diffuses into air sacs (alveoli) → exhaled
