What is it?
Christianity is a monotheistic religion but this one God has three parts
Early Christians developed this concept to understand the nature of God - the word ‘Trinity’ is not used in the Bible
Mathew: “in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.”
God the Father
Seen as the creator of the universe
Genesis: “God created the heavens and the earth.”
Believed to be the part that judges our actions when we die
He is seen as the one who has a plan for everything
God the Son
Although he was human, Christians believe he was also God
We refer him as ‘God Incarnate’ as it was the part of God that was sent to live on earth
John 3: “For God so loved the world that he gave is one and only Son.”
God the Holy Spirit
Described as a Paraclete - ‘helper’
Still present in the world and provides people with qualitites to help them become more ‘God-like’ - referred to St. Paul as the ‘Fruits of the Holy Spirit’
The Holy Spirit is a way of communicating with God - many claim to experience the Holy Spirit during prayer
