Americans with Disabilities Act
World’s 1st comprehensive civil rights law for ppl with disabilities
Prohibits discrimination against ppl with discrimination in employment, public services, public accommodation + telecommunication
Dept req to make reasonable accommodation
Ex. No height or weight req; Most want at least diploma

Job Analysis
Identifies the most important skills that must be performed by officers + then identifies the knowledge, skills, abilities to perform it

Concept that job reqs must be necessary for the performance of the job a person is applying for
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA)
Talents or attributes necessary to do a certain job

Selection Process

Emotional Intelligence (EI)
Ability to interpret, understand, + manage one’s own + other’s emotions which encompasses the competencies valued in law enforcement (ex. self awareness, self control, conflict management, leadership)
Physical Agility Test
A test of physical fitness to determine if a candidate has the needed strength + endurance to be a cop
Polygraph
A mechanical/electrical device designed to ascertain whether someone is telling the truth
Lie detector
Background Investigation
Complete + thorough investigation of an applicant’s past life (including edu, employment, crim history, driving, relationships, character)
Includes verification of all statements made by applicant on background form + evaluation of both detected + undetected behavior to det whether candidate is good for law enforcement
Police Academy
The initial formal training that a new officer receives to learn police procedures, state laws, + objectives of law enforcement
Gives officers KSA’s to accomplish job
Field Training
An on the job training program that occurs after police academy under direction of FTO
Field Training Officer (FTO)
An experienced officer who mentors + trains new officers
Probationary Period
The period in the early part of an officer’s career in which the officer can be dismissed if not performing to dept standards
Around 12 months/1 year

Hogan’s Alley
A shooting course in which simulated good + bad guys pop up, requiring cops to make split sec decisions
In Service Training
Training that occurs during a police officer’s career, usually on a reg basis + usually within the dept, often req by dept policy or state mandate
