Stress
A process whereby an individual perceives and responds to events that they appraise as overwhelming or threatening to their well-being.
Eustress
A positive form of stress that is low to moderate in intensity, associated with positive feelings and optimal performance.
Distress
A negative form of stress that is intense and often leads to exhaustion and diminished performance.
General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS)
Hans Selye's model of the body's physiological response to stress, which includes three stages: alarm reaction, stage of resistance, and stage of exhaustion.
Primary Appraisal
Judgment about the potential harm or threat a stressor may entail.
Secondary Appraisal
Judgment of the options available to cope with a stressor and the perceived effectiveness of those options.
Psychophysiological Disorders
Physical disorders or diseases whose symptoms are brought about or worsened by stress and emotional factors.
Coping
Mental and behavioral efforts used to manage problems relating to stress, including its cause and the unpleasant feelings it produces.
Problem-Focused Coping
Coping strategies aimed at managing or altering the problem causing the stress.
Emotion-Focused Coping
Coping strategies aimed at reducing emotional distress related to a stressor.
