Why were graduated driving licenses developed?

As a way to prevent adolescence from being risky/partaking in such behaviour.

What happens when you have a graduated driving license?

  • New drivers are given a probationary period where their driving is restricted in certain ways (e.g. not being able to drive at night or with passengers).

  • There are different levels of driving license e.g. learners permit, a restricted/provisional license and then a full license

  • In New Zealand, car crash injuries reduced by 23% for 15-19 year old and 12% for 20-24 year olds

  • 16 year olds in the US have 37% fewer crashes per year

  • In the UK it’s estimated it could prevent more than 400 deaths and serious injuries each year and save the economy £200 million/year
