A mnemonic to remember the names of the cranial nerves: Olfactory, Optic, Oculomotor, Trochlear, Trigeminal, Abducens, Facial, Vestibulocochlear, Glossopharyngeal, Vagus, Accessory, Hypoglossal
Olfactory
The first cranial nerve, responsible for smell.
Optic
The second cranial nerve, responsible for vision.
Oculomotor
The third cranial nerve, controls eye movement, pupil constriction, and upper eyelid elevation.
Trochlear
The fourth cranial nerve, controls superior oblique muscle for eye movement.
Trigeminal
The fifth cranial nerve, responsible for facial sensation, chewing.
Abducens
The sixth cranial nerve, controls lateral rectus muscle for eye abduction.
Facial
The seventh cranial nerve, controls facial expression, taste, and salivation.
Vestibulocochlear (Auditory)
The eighth cranial nerve, responsible for hearing and balance.
Glossopharyngeal
The ninth cranial nerve, responsible for taste, swallowing, and salivation.
Vagus
The tenth cranial nerve, controls parasympathetic functions, sensation, and motor control in thorax and abdomen.
Accessory (Spinal Accessory)
The eleventh cranial nerve, controls muscles of the neck and upper back.
Hypoglossal
The twelfth cranial nerve, controls tongue movement.
