Setting
The general locale, historical time period, and social circumstances in which the action of a fictional or dramatic work occurs.
Third person limited/objective point of view
When the person telling the story is not one of the characters in the story. He or she is an outside observer. The reader may only know the thoughts and feelings of ONE character in the story. This is a narrator who is totally impersonal and objective tells the story, with no comment on any characters or events.
Point of View (POV)
The perspective from which a story is told.
First person point of view
When the person telling the story is one of the characters in the story. It is the "I" point of view. It is the most limited among the types because the narrator can only state what he or she sees, feels, and hears.
third person omniscient point of view
When the person telling the story is also an outside observer, but this narrator is able to know the thoughts and feelings of most or of ALL the characters in the story.
Plot
The sequence of events that make up a story, whether it's told, written, filmed, or sung.
Rising action
The part of the story that presents a central conflict within a character or between one or more characters. The conflict builds during this section.
Climax
The part of the story when the conflict is at its peak and when there seems to be no viable solution to the conflict.
Exposition
The introduction to the story. The characters and the setting are introduced.
Falling action
The part of the story after the climax when the reader is still unsure if the protagonist will
be able to resolve the conflict.
Flashback
When there is an interruption of the chronological sequence of events with an event of
earlier occurrence.
Resolution
The part of the story that is the conclusion to the plot. Typically, the conflict is wrapped up at this point.
Foreshadowing
When the writer provides clues or hints that suggest or predict future events in a story.
