Effective Communication
Enhances practice by transmitting information, clarifying intentions, facilitating learner input, promoting meaningfulness, and fostering motivation and effort.
Types of Communication
Includes instructions which provide information before practice and feedback which is provided after practice.
Implicit Learning
Encouraged through exploration of movement solutions, leading to better performance outcomes.
Guidelines for Instructions
Instructions should convey mastery goals, encourage implicit learning, consider learner characteristics, and be short and concise.
Modality of Instructions
Refers to different formats of delivering instructions, including verbal, written, demonstrations, or videos.
Attention
Considered a cognitive skill that is learned; important for task-relevant feature recognition and movement association.
Focus of Attention
Can be external, focusing on environmental outcomes, or internal, focusing on bodily movements; each has different effects on learning.
Augmented Feedback (AFB)
Provides external information about motor performance that builds on intrinsic (internal) feedback.
Knowledge of Results (KR)
Type of AFB that provides information on the outcome of a motor skill.
Knowledge of Performance (KP)
Type of AFB that provides information on how the motor skill was produced.
Descriptive vs. Prescriptive AFB
Descriptive AFB describes errors and promotes implicit learning, while prescriptive AFB instructs corrections explicitly.
Frequency of AFB
Refers to how often feedback is provided; optimal frequency supports implicit learning.
Timing of AFB
Refers to when feedback is given during practice; can be provided before, during, or after performance.
Overlearning
Continued practice beyond plateaus in performance, enhancing retention and transfer.
Practice Macrostructure
Overall organization of practice schedules, including length, frequency, and duration.
Practice Microstructure
Specific organization within individual practice sessions, including variations and order of skills.
