What is heating in a crucible used for?
measuring mass loss in thermal decomposition reactions and mass gain when reacting magnesium in oxygen
What is the method for heating in a crucible?
weigh an empty clean dry crucible and lid
add 2g of hydrated calcium sulfate to the crucible and weigh again
heat strongly with a bunsen burner for a couple of minutes
allow to cool
weigh the crucible and contents again
heat crucible again and reweigh until you reach a constant mass to ensure the reaction is complete
What does the lid do in this experiment?
improves the accuracy of the experiment as it prevents loss of solid from the crucible
should be loose fitting to allow gas to escape
Why should large amounts of calcium sulfate not be used?
decomposition is likely to be incomplete
Why should small amounts of calcium sulfate not be used?
the percentage uncertainty in weighing will be too high
Why should the crucible be dry?
a wet crucible would give an inaccurate result and would cause mass loss to be too large as the water would be lost when heating
