Through the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, we encounter Christ and transform suffering into a path of redemption.
Biblical Foundation James 5:13-16
If you're suffering, pray; if you're joyful, sing praise.
Is anyone among you sick (asthenei)? He should summon the presbyters of the church, and they should pray over him and anoint (him) with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. Confess your sins and pray for each other to be healed—the prayer of the righteous is powerful.
Important points from the letter of James:
Prayer is applied to three existential situations: (a) those who suffer should pray; (b) those are joyful should sing praise; (c) those who are sick should seek the prayer of the presbyters.
Important points from the letter of James:
Important points from the letter of James:
“Asthenia” does not refer to grave illness but to any illness. The presbyters are called to minister to the to the sick and not just the dying.
Important points from the letter of James:
While the illness may be bodily, the healing of the person is both bodily (anointing) and spiritual (prayer of faith).
Important points from the letter of James:
Those who are called to heal have ecclesial authority not merely charismatic power.
Anointing of the Sick: Matter
Oil of the Sick
The anointing is typically done on the forehead and hands of the sick person, or on other parts of the body in the Eastern rite.
Anointing of the Sick: Form
Through this holy anointing may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up.
The sacrament is celebrated by the anointing of the forehead and hands of the sick person or of other parts of the body.
Anointing of the Sick: Form
The administration of the sacrament of Anointing of the sick is encouraged in periculo mortis (in danger of death) not in articulo mortis (in the point of death). In articulo mortis means that the person is in the point of dying wherein his/her senses already falters and the administration of the sacrament seems meaningless to the person because of his/her condition.
