What is the difference between cytoplasm and protoplasm?

• Protoplasm is the entire content of the cell

  CYTOPLASM + NUCLEOPLASM

• Cytoplasm is part of the protoplasm outside the nucleous
  Cytosol + organelles (NOT NUCLEUS)

What is the importance of Cell Walls

1. Shape maintanance

2. Size expansion control

3. Protection

4. Transportation

5. Food Reserve

What is the middle lamella in Plant Cells?

1. First layer formed during cell division

2. Pectins glues the cells together

Secondary Cell Walls

1. Made in primary cell wall (from thickening of lignin)

2. Has more Cellulose than the primary

Lignin

Polymer of cell plants, provides rigidity, strength and waterproofs.

Plasma Membrane

• Outer Boundary of a living cell

  • Regulates transport of substances (in vs out)

Cholesterol

• Helps stabilize phospholipid bilayer

• Regulates membrane fluidity

Chromatin

DNA and Histone proteins packaged together in nucleus, coils into chromosomes

Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)

• Connected to outer membrane of nucleus

• Network of sacs and tubes throughout cytoplasm

• Allows communication and channeling of materials

• Synthesis of membranes for other organelles

• Modifies proteins

Rough ER

• Ribosomes may be distributed on the outer surface.

• Mainly associated with synthesis, secretion, or storage of protein

Smooth ER

Lipid Secretion

• Little ribosomes lining the surface
