Psychodynamic Perspective
The approach based on the view that behavior is motivated by unconscious inner forces over which the individual has little control.
The Conscious
Everything we basically think about.
The Preconscious
Contains everything we can potentially summon.
The Unconscious
Has no access to thoughts from here, use of psychic energy.
ID
Is the irrational, emotional, impulsive part of the mind that pushes people to act on their impulses and seeks immediate gratification.
Ego
Is the irrational part of the mind that considers all perspectives and weighs the pros and cons of a course of action.
Superego
Is the morale part of the mind that seeks to follow rules, social norms, and personal value.
Repression
No conscious awareness.
Regression
Revert to child-like behavior.
Projection
Accusing someone else for your feelings/behavior.
Displacement
Redirecting impulse to something less bad.
Reaction Formation
To act the opposite.
Rationalization
Justification.
Denial
The blocking external events from awareness. (the refusal to acknowlege)
Sublimation
Redirecting to positive/satisfying an impulse with a substitute object.
Psychodynamic Personality Psychologists
Neither valid or reliable.
Projective Tests
They are psychological assessment tools that present ambiguous stimuli to individuals, encouraging them to project their unconscious thoughts, feelings, and desires onto these stimuli.
Rorschach Inkblot Tests
Asks people to say what they see in a series of inkblot images.
