What is mass?
Amount of matter in a substance - measured in g or kg
2
New cards
What is volume?
The amount of space the matter takes up - measured in mL or L
3
New cards
Why do we use sig figs?
To show how precise our measurements are

How do you find the significant figures in any number?
If the decimal is present, read the number from left to right

If the decimal is absent, read the number from right to left.

The first digit that is not zero is significant, and everything after it is also.

Example: 12 600 has 3 sig figs and  30.00 has 4 sig figs

How do you measure the mass and volume of a liquid?
Mass:

1. Place a graduated cylinder on the scale, read the mass of it
2. Use the re zero function, and take it off of the scale
3. Put the liquid inside of the graduated cylinder and back on the scale
4. Since you used the re zero function, the mass that is says will only be the mass of the liquid

Volume: Place the liquid in the graduated cylinder and read the volume of it from the bottom of the meniscus

How do you measure the mass and volume of a solid?
Mass: Place the object on a scale, and read the mass of it

Volume

1. Pour liquid into a graduated cylinder, and read the volume of it
2. Place the object in the liquid and record the new volume
3. Subtract the new volume from initial volume and that is the volume of the solid
7
New cards
What is density?
How much matter is in a given amount of space
8
New cards
From a solid to a gas… more or less dense?
less dense because gas occupies more space
9
New cards
What is special about the density of water
Ice is less dense than liquid water and ice particles form a lattice
10
New cards
Density formula
D=m/v
11
New cards
Volume formula
v=m/D
12
New cards
Mass formula
m=D x v

How to answer density problem
Answer should have the same sig figs as given value with fewest sig figs
