Epithelial Tissue
Covers body surfaces, lines hollow organs, tubes, cavities and ducts; forms glands.
Connective Tissue
Cells in a matrix of fibres and ground substance; includes bone and blood.
Muscle Tissue
Contractile cells (muscle fibres) responsible for movement.
Nervous Tissue
Conducting nerve cells and supportive neuroglia that detect changes and generate nerve impulses.
Homeostasis
The ability of the body to maintain a stable internal environment.
Cardiovascular System
Composed of the heart and blood vessels, responsible for transporting blood throughout the body.
Respiratory System
Involved in gas exchange, transporting oxygen and carbon dioxide between the body and the environment.
Digestive System
Breaks down food, absorbs nutrients, and eliminates waste.
Endocrine System
Consists of glands that produce hormones to regulate various bodily functions.
Lymphatic System
Carries lymph fluid, monitors the composition of lymph, and plays a role in immune responses.
Organ
A structure composed of two or more different tissues that work together to perform specific functions.
System
A group of related organs that work together to perform a common function.
Organismal Level
All parts of the body function together to constitute a living individual.
Chemical Level
The simplest level of organization, involving atoms and molecules.
Cellular Level
The basic structural and functional units of the body, making up tissues.
Histology
The microscopic study of tissues.
Hypodermis
The layer of tissue that attaches the skin to underlying structures.
Mitochondrion
An organelle responsible for energy production within the cell.
Golgi Apparatus
An organelle involved in modifying, sorting, and packaging proteins for secretion.
Lysosome
An organelle containing digestive enzymes used to break down waste materials and cellular debris.
