Vagina
Muscular, collapsable hollow tube that ends at the beginning of the uterus.
Cervix
The door of the uterus.
Uterus
Hollow organ that holds and grows the baby; has thick musculature without pregnancy and thins during pregnancy.
Fallopian Tubes
Connect to the ovaries with fimbriae; the site where egg fertilization often occurs.
Ovaries
Store hormones and eggs; all eggs present at birth, no new ones made.
Ovulation
The release of the egg from the ovaries.
Fertilization
The meeting of egg and sperm, commonly referred to as conception.
Ectopic Pregnancy
A pregnancy that starts in the fallopian tube, usually ending in miscarriage.
Hysterectomy
The surgical removal of the uterus.
Menarche
The first menstruation, usually occurring around 12 years of age.
Menstruation
The shedding of the uterine lining; initially unpredictable and painless in the first year.
Prostaglandin
Hormones that rise after ovulation, causing uterine contractions to propel sperm forward.
Menopause
The end of reproductive ability in a woman, usually around age 51.
Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)
Used to alleviate menopausal symptoms like hot flashes and vaginal dryness.
Pre-conception Care
Health care aimed at minimizing risks before pregnancy.
Infertility
The inability to achieve pregnancy after one year of unprotected intercourse.
Contraception
Intentional prevention of pregnancy during sexual intercourse.
Gravida
The term used to indicate the number of pregnancies a woman has had.
Parity
The term used to denote the number of pregnancies that reached 20 weeks or more.
Folic Acid
A crucial nutrient that helps prevent neural tube defects in the developing fetus.
Ductus Arteriosus
A fetal blood vessel that shunts blood away from the lungs during gestation.
Nuchal Cord
A condition when the umbilical cord is wrapped around the baby's neck.
Chromosomal Abnormalities
Genetic disorders caused by abnormalities in chromosome number or structure.
Trisomy 21
The most common chromosomal abnormality, also known as Down syndrome.
Basal Body Temperature
A method used to track ovulation by charting temperature changes.
PAP Test
A screening procedure for cervical cancer.
Intimate Partner Violence (IPV)
Violence committed by a partner; about ¼ of women experience it.
