Hydrometeorological Hazards
Processes or phenomena of atmospheric, hydrological or oceanographic nature that may cause loss of life, injury, property damage, and environmental damage.
Tropical Cyclone
An intense circular storm originating over warm tropical oceans, characterized by low pressure, high winds, and heavy rain.
PAGASA
The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, responsible for weather forecasting in the Philippines.
Weather Forecast
A scientific estimate of future weather conditions based on various atmospheric variables.
Thunderstorm
A powerful, short-lived weather disturbance associated with lightning, heavy rain, and strong winds.
Cumulus Clouds
Clouds that form when the sun heats the Earth's surface, creating warm air that rises.
Dissipating Stage
The phase of a thunderstorm when downdrafts begin to dominate, causing the storm to weaken.
Flood
A high-water stage where water overflows its banks onto normally dry land.
Flash Floods
Rapid floods caused by heavy rain over a short period, often in less than 6 hours.
El Niño
A climatic phenomenon characterized by unusually warm ocean waters in the Pacific, affecting global weather patterns.
La Niña
A climatic condition representing below-average sea surface temperatures in the central Pacific, opposite to El Niño.
Bolide Impact
The impact of an extraterrestrial object like an asteroid or comet that poses a threat to the planet.
Chicxulub Crater
A crater in the Yucatan Peninsula, evidence of the impact linked to the K-Pg mass extinction event.
Impact Crater
A depression excavated on the Earth's surface by the impact of a celestial object.
Coastal Erosion
The natural process that shapes shorelines by the wearing away of coastal land by wave action.
Human-induced Coastal Erosion
Coastal erosion caused or worsened by human activities such as construction and removal of vegetation.
Fire Hazards
Potential dangers related to uncontrolled fires caused by human errors or failures.
Survival Kit
A set of basic supplies prepared for emergencies to ensure survival.
Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR)
The concept and practice of reducing disaster risks through the management of their causes.
Preparedness
The knowledge and capacities developed to effectively anticipate and respond to hazard events.
Response
Emergency services and public assistance provided during or immediately after a disaster.
Recovery
The restoration and improvement of the living conditions of communities affected by disasters.
