Livestock
Animals kept or raised for use, pleasure, profit, and products.
Animal Husbandry
The science of raising and caring for livestock.
Carcass
The body of an animal after it has been slaughtered.
Cull
To remove an animal from the herd, flock, or drove.
Cross-breeding
Mating an animal of one breed to an animal of another breed.
Marbling
Fat dispersed within the meat.
Broodiness
Maternal characteristics of an animal.
Polled
Born naturally without horns.
Replacement
An animal that is bought or raised to replace a less desirable animal in the herd.
Condition
The amount of fat cover on the body of an animal.
Dual Purpose
Something raised for more than one product, such as meat and milk.
Preconditioning
Preparing a calf for moving to a feedlot, including vaccinations and weaning.
Soundness
Having correct skeletal structure.
Roughage
Feed that is bulky, high in fiber, and low in energy.
Conformation
Shape and body type of an animal.
By-Products
Products left after the main products have been extracted.
Flock
A group of sheep or chickens.
Herd
A group of cattle or goats.
Drove
A group of pigs.
Immunity
The ability of an animal to resist or recover from infection.
Parturition
Giving birth.
Cud/Rumination
A ball of regurgitated food that ruminants chew then re-swallow.
