Covering and Lining Membranes
Composed of at least two primary tissue types: an epithelium bound to underlying connective tissue.
Cutaneous Membranes
Skin; consists of keratinized stratified squamous epithelium attached to connective tissue.
Mucous Membranes
Membranes that line body cavities open to the exterior, moist and bathed by secretions.
Serous Membranes
Found in closed ventral body cavities; consist of a parietal and visceral serosa.
Extracellular Matrix
A nonliving material outside of cells in connective tissues that provides support.
Collagen
Strongest and most abundant fiber type in connective tissue, providing high tensile strength.
Adipose Tissue
A connective tissue that stores fat, providing insulation and energy storage.
Hyaline Cartilage
The most common type of cartilage, providing support and flexibility.
Osteoblasts
Immature bone cells that produce the matrix of bone.
Exocrine Glands
Glands that secrete products onto body surfaces or into body cavities, such as mucous and sweat glands.
