Synarthrosis
An immovable joint that allows no movement.
Amphiarthrosis
A slightly movable joint that allows limited movement.
Diarthrosis
A freely movable joint that allows a wide range of motion.
Bony Joint
A joint formed when two bones fuse together.
Fibrous Joint
A joint connected by dense connective tissue, allowing little to no movement.
Cartilaginous Joint
A joint where bones are connected by cartilage, allowing more movement than fibrous joints.
Synovial Joint
A highly movable joint characterized by the presence of a synovial cavity.
Synovial Fluid
A viscous fluid secreted by synovial membranes to lubricate joints.
Meniscus
A cartilage pad that cushions the joint and stabilizes it.
Dislocation
An injury where articulating surfaces are forced out of position.
Subluxation
A partial dislocation of a joint.
Flexion
A movement that decreases the angle between two body parts.
Extension
A movement that increases the angle between two body parts.
Abduction
A movement away from the midline of the body.
Adduction
A movement towards the midline of the body.
Circumduction

Rotation
A movement around an axis.
Pronation
The rotational movement of the forearm that indicates palm down.
Supination
The rotational movement of the forearm that indicates palm up.
Inversion
A movement that twists the sole of the foot medially.
Eversion
A movement that twists the sole of the foot laterally.
Elevation
The upward movement of a body part.
Depression
The downward movement of a body part.
Knee Joint
A complex hinge joint that transfers weight from femur to tibia.
Patellar Ligament
A ligament that connects the patella to the tibia.
Hip Joint
A ball-and-socket joint that allows for a wide range of motion.
Shoulder Joint
A highly mobile ball-and-socket joint that connects the humerus to the scapula.
