What quantities are conserved in particle?
Quantum numbers:
Electric charge, baryon number, lepton number, strangeness,
And momentum
How is charge conservation applied in reactions?
Total charge before= total charge after
If total charge differs, the reaction is forbidden
What is strangeness, and how is it conserved?
Strangeness is a quantum number assigned a strange quark (s)
In strong and electromagnetic interactions, strangeness is conserved
In weak interactions strangeness is not conserved (it can change)- e.g. strange quarks decay
An example of of a reaction conserving all quantum numbers
Neutron beta decay
Neutron—> proton+electron+antineutrino
