Lymphatic System
A collection of organs, tissues, and cells that help the body respond to pathogens.
Fluid Balance
One of the primary functions of the lymphatic system which helps maintain fluid levels in the body.
Lymphatic Capillaries
Blind-ended tubes that are large in diameter with thin walls due to an incomplete endothelial cell layer.
Venous Blood
Blood that is returned to the heart from the body through the venous system.
Lymph Nodes
Small, bean-shaped structures that filter lymph and are sites for immune cell activation.
Lymph
A clear, mostly colorless fluid similar to plasma but without red blood cells or plasma proteins.
Primary Lymphatic Organs
Includes the red bone marrow and thymus, where lymphocytes are produced and mature.
Secondary Lymphatic Organs
Includes lymph nodes and spleen, where lymphocytes become activated.
Thoracic Duct
The largest lymphatic vessel in the body that collects lymph from the left side of the head, neck, and thorax.
Immune Responses
The processes by which the body recognizes and defends itself against pathogens.
