Bartletts theory of reconstructive memory
Strength- real world examples
Weakness- not all memories are reconstructed
Bartletts war of the ghosts study
Ppts had to recall an unfamiliar story a number of times or to a different person. Over time their versions became shorter and they used schemas for unfamiliar items e.g. canoe became baat until eventually the version became fixed
Bartletts study evaluation
Strength- external validity- can explain mistakes when discussing other cultures in the real world
Weakness- didn’t use scientific method- no standardisation
Murdocks serial position effect study
Ppts learned word lists of about 10-40 words long and had to recall them. In any order. They recalled the words from the end of the list (recency effect) and the start of the list (primacy effect) the most and forgot those in the middle (evidence of the forgotten stores)
Murdocks study evaluation
Strength- controlled lab study
Weakness- artificial task
MSM of memory evaluation
Strength- research evidence- Murdock
Weakness- too simple
LTM evaluation
Strength- brain scans have identified the different types of LTM
Weakness- The types may be difficult to completely separate
