Why did we, and continue to, develop manufactured fibers?
they are versatile, quick to produce, and engineered for performance needs!
What were the first regenerated fibers?
Rayon
What was the first synthetic fiber?
Nylon
What are the different classification types of yarns?
Fiber length
Fiber alignment
Twist
Size
Number of components
Regularity of irregularity along length’Manufacturing process
What are the characteristics of better quality yarns?
Free of defects
Regular in diameter
Stronger with more parallel fibers
Twist is tighter
Regenerated Fiber
Made from natural materials (usually plant-based like wood pulp or cotton linters)
The natural material is chemically processed and re-formed into fibers
So they start natural → get dissolved → then “regenerated” into a new fibe
Synthetic Fiber
Made from completely man-made chemicals, usually derived from petroleum (oil)
Built from scratch through chemical synthesis
No natural fiber structure to begin with
Why does a higher fabric count indicate a higher quality fabric?
Less shrinkage
Less raveling
Finer, strong yarns
When is a fabric “on-grain”?
when the wrap thread and weft threads are at a 90 degree angle to one another –this is ideal!
