Province
This works similarly to a state. It has its own government, run by a Premier. Examples: Alberta, Ontario and Quebec.
Territory
Area of land that relies more on the Federal government, rather than a regionally specific one. Examples: Nunavut or Yukon.
Push Factor
A factor that makes people want to leave their home countries.
Pull Factor
A factor that makes people want to move to a new country.
Indigenous
Native, or originating in a place. Examples: First Nations, Metis or Inuit.
First Nations
A group of Canada's Native American people. Mostly located in the south of Canada.
Metis
People of mixed Native American and European descent. They have their own identity and culture.
Inuit
Another Native group that is located in the far north, in the Arctic region.
Arctic
the area around the North Pole that is very cold.
Plateau
Flat area of land that is elevated high above sea level.
Prairie
a treeless grassy plain. Very flat and good for farming in Provinces such as Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba.
Lock
Part of a canal where water is raised or lowered, allowing ships to travel between lakes higher than sea level.
Overfishing
Catching fish faster than they can reproduce. Hurts our oceans.
Rural
countryside with very few people.
Urban
city. Lots of people living there.
Abundance
Having more than enough of something.
Scarcity
Limited amounts of something. Not enough.
Sustain
To support or keep up. People working with the environment. Example: growing a garden in your back yard to support bees and butterflies.
Conserve
To save by using carefully. Example: not letting water run when you are not using it, or turning off lights when you are not in a room.
Canal
Man-made waterway. In Canada, these canals connect many of the Great Lakes.
Great Lakes
Region of lakes between Canada and the United States. Examples: Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior.
Fur Trade
the trading of goods for animal skins. Early pull factor for European colonists.
Official Languages of Canada
English and French.
Transcontinental Railroad
Railroad connecting the west and east coasts of Canada.
Physiographic
the physical traits of an area of land.
Immigration
Movement of individuals into a population.
Independence
Freedom from something. Example: Quebec wants to get independence from Canada.
