What is substance use disorder?
it is a pathological use of substances that leads to a disorder of use
What are process addictions?
there are no substances but rather a behavior or the feeling brought about by the relevant action
What is addiction?
it is a chronic medical condition with roots in the environment, neurotransmission, genetics, and life experiences
What is intoxication?
it may manifest itself in a variety of ways depending on the physiological response of the body to the substance being used
individuals who are using substances are considered to be under the influence, intoxicated, or high
ex: alcohol cause one to be drunk
ex: marijuana makes you stoned
What is tolerance?
it occurs when a person no longer responds to the drug in the way that the person initially responded
What is withdrawal?
it is a set of physiological symptoms that occur when a person stops using a substance
it is specific to the substance being used, and each substance will have its own characteristics syndrome
What are co-occurring disorders?
they may include any combination of two or more substance disorders and psychiatric disorders identified in the DSM-5
What is the Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT)?
it is a program that is a comprehensive, integrated, public health approach to the delivery of early intervention and treatment services for person with substance use disorders as well as those who are at risk of developing these disorders
What is codependence?
it is a cluster of behaviors originally identified through research involving the families of alcoholic patients
What are the signs and symptoms of drug abuse?
chest pain
arrythmias
high or low BP
respiratory depression
pinpoint pupils
high hunger
