Releasing/inhibiting factors

Secreted by the hypothalamus to control the anterior pituitary; modifies anterior pituitary activity.

GH (Growth Hormone)

Secreted by the anterior pituitary to increase bone/muscle growth and cell turnover.

Prolactin

Secreted by the anterior pituitary for mammary gland milk production (not ejection).

TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone)

Secreted by the anterior pituitary to stimulate the thyroid, increasing TH synthesis and release, thus increasing metabolism.

ACTH (Adrenocorticotropic Hormone)

Secreted by the anterior pituitary to stimulate the adrenal cortex, increasing growth/secretion of adrenal cortex (cortisol).

LH (Luteinizing Hormone)

Secreted by the anterior pituitary to trigger ovulation/testosterone production in the ovaries/testes.

FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone)

Secreted by the anterior pituitary to promote spermatogenesis & follicle development in the ovaries/testes.

ADH (Antidiuretic Hormone)

Secreted by the posterior pituitary to promote water retention in the kidney, increasing blood pressure.

Oxytocin

Secreted by the posterior pituitary for breast milk ejection and uterine contraction.

TH (Thyroid Hormone)

Secreted by the thyroid; necessary for development in children and increases metabolic rate & temperature in adults.

Calcitonin

Secreted by thyroid C cells to decrease Ca2+ in bone/kidney/GI.

PTH (Parathyroid Hormone)

Secreted by the parathyroids to increase Ca2+ in bone/kidney/small intestine.

Thymosin

Secreted by the thymus (only in kids) for T-cell development (children only).

Epinephrine

Secreted by the adrenal medulla for rapid sympathetic stress response (fight-or-flight).

Cortisol

Secreted by the adrenal cortex for longer stress response; increases glucose and protein breakdown.

Aldosterone

Secreted by the adrenal cortex to promote Na+ retention in the kidney and increase blood pressure.

Sex steroids

Secreted by the adrenal cortex (minor in adults); function is not normally important.

Insulin

Secreted by the endocrine pancreas to decrease blood glucose and increase storage (glycogen/fat).

Glucagon

Secreted by the endocrine pancreas to increase blood glucose and decrease storage.

Somatostatin

Secreted by the endocrine pancreas to inhibit digestion.

Testosterone

Secreted by the testes to promote male traits and spermatogenesis.

Estrogen

Secreted by the ovaries/placenta to promote female traits and endometrial growth.

Progesterone

Secreted by the ovaries/placenta to promote endometrial maintenance and pregnancy.

ANF (Atrial Natriuretic Factor)

Secreted by the heart to increase urination and decrease blood pressure via the kidney.

Erythropoietin

Secreted by the kidney to increase RBC synthesis in the bone marrow.
