Insomnia
difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
becomes worse when stressed about
Narcolepsy
sudden attacks of overwhelming sleepiness that usually last 5 mins or less
can lapse directly into REM — this can be dangerous if it happens at an inconvenient time
Sleep Apnea
intermittently stop breathing during sleep
"wake up” hundreds of times per night to begin breathing again
treatments include weight loss and using a CPAP machine
Night Terrors
sudden arousal from sleep and intense fear accompanied by physiological reactions
seems to be related to some fear a child has…but it is not the same as a nightmare — only see images
if they're not woken up, children often do not remember in the morning
Sleepwalking
sleepwalking - somnabulism, happens during stage 3
sleep talking can occur at any stage
both run in families
REM Behavior Disorder (RBD)
muscles aren't paralyzed in REM allowing the person to act out their dreams (usually vivid, violent, intense dreams)
seen more often in middle-aged/elderly men
