Beta sheets
A common secondary structure in proteins characterized by extended peptide bonds.
Hydrogen bonds in beta sheets
Can form between adjacent peptide chains, either inter-chain or intra-chain.
Parallel sheets
Beta sheets where chains run in the same direction and hydrogen bonds are angled.
Anti-parallel sheets
Beta sheets where chains run in opposite directions and hydrogen bonds align vertically.
Representation of beta sheets
Typically depicted as ribbons with arrows pointing toward the C terminal.
Side chains in beta sheets
May be predominantly hydrophobic or hydrophilic, creating diverse structural patches.
Strands in beta sheets
Typically consist of up to 10 strands.
