What is feudalism?
A political and social order that developed during the middle ages when kingdoms could not defend themselves against the vikings.
What is a feudal contract?
Formal recognition of an obligation/service on recieved/provided services to another in the system of feudalism.
What is a vassal?
A man who serves a lord in a miliatary capacity.
What are knights? Are all vassals knights?
Knights are trained soldiers and all knights are vassals but not all vassals are nights.
What is chivalry?
Idea of civilized behavior developed among the nobility based on ethics. It included defending the church and king, respecting women and prisoners, and spreading heroic tales to promote these values.
What type of system is feudalism and what are its charecteristics?
It is a political system and its charecteristics are: 1) decentralized local government, 2) dependant on the relationship between members of nobility, 3) lord and his vassals administered justice and were the highest authority in the land.
What type of system is manorialism? What are its charecteristics?
It is an economic system, and its charecteristics are: 1) agriculture was the basis of wealth, 2) lands are divided up into manors, 3) peasants worked the land and paid rent in return for protection, 4) the barter system was the main means of exchange.
What were some new advancements in agriculture?
Crops were planted in seasons, new labor saving devices such as the carrucca were implemented, and three field crop rotation was used.
Why did trade increase?
Due to an increase in agriculture (materials to trade) and cities/towns.
What was the hanseatic league?
A group of more than 100 european cities that banded together for trade.
What was the effect of an increase in trade?
1) Goods became specialized by region, 2) gold and silver became desirable mediums for exchange, 3) banks formed (first service rather than good), 4) people invested in trade and goods for profit (emergance of capitalism).
Why did cities and towns grow?
Due to an increase in trade.
How did daily life change in cities?
Cities had their own specific laws, freedoms such as freedom from miliatary service, right to buy and sell property, and individual freedomes. Cities develope their own system of government. walls were constructed to protect valuable things and people.
what were the bourgeoisie?
A social class of middle class made up of merchants, industrialists, and professionals. (Burg = walled).
What were the patricians?
Wealthy powerful landowners.
