New cards
How is the pH scale and “inverse scale?
It’s an inverse scale because the more Hydrogen ions there are, the more acidic and the lower the number on the scale.
2
New cards
What is the pH levels for cells, blood, stomach, and small intestine?
cells= 6.8

blood= 7.4

stomach= 1.5 (acidic)

small intestine= 7-9
3
New cards
What systems control pH levels of the body.
Urinary, respiratory and circulatory systems all control pH levels using feedback loops to maintain homeostasis.

Breathing out= lowers pH

secreting ammonia= removes hydrogen ions and increase pH

Bicarbonate can also be reabsorbed by urinary system organs like kidneys which lowers pH
4
New cards
What are the organs and accessory organs of the digestive system
oral cavity

tongue

esophagus

stomach

small intestine

large intestine

rectum

\
liver

gallbladder
5
New cards
what are the function of each organ?
oral cavity- teeth and saliva are the initial breakdown of food

tongue- muscle that moves food from oral cavity to esophagus

esophagus- transports food from mouth to esophagus

stomach- uses enzymes and stomach acid to break down food in stomach to make a paste

small intestine- continues to break down food using bile and absorbs nutrients. Bile breaks down fats and vitamins and removes waste

large intestine- processes waste for defecation

rectum- stores and releases stool

liver- produces bile

gallbladder- stores bile/ brings it to the small intestine
6
New cards
what organs use chemical and mechanical digestion?
__**Mechanical**__

\-stomach/contracts

oral cavity/ teeth

__**Chemical**__

\-oral cavity/ saliva

stomach/acid

small intestine/ bile

large intestine

\
7
New cards
what enteric coating?
protects the active ingredients of a medication from enzymes in saliva and stomach acid

it will only dissolve in the basic/alkaline environment of the small intestine
