What are the truths we learn about God and man from the 2nd creation account?

Our purpose is to:

• take care of creation

• be in relationships

• be co-creators

God gives us purpose and life, is creative, and shares himself with us

Anthropomorphism

Attributing human characteristics to something that is not human (God)

Stewardship

• humans responsibility to the earth and God

• we are given all other creatures for our benefit

• God puts everything in our care to nurture and care for

What are the different types of likeness in which God created us

• physical

• mental

• moral

• social

Results of the fall

Snake → head is to be stepped on by Jesus, will crawl on is belly, and be the lowest of the low

Eve → childbearing is heard and man is above her

Adam → will work until he dies and turn back into dust

Overall → death, pain, suffering, hardwork

Stewards of creation

Humans have been created in God’s likeness to watch and help all other creations

Soul

• is created by God

• is central to personhood

• makes us like God (is immortal)

How is man created in each of the creation accounts?

• genesis 1 → God creates man on the 6th day by speaking him into existence to rule over all of creation with God

• genesis 2 → God breathes life into a pile of sand/dirt/dust that he has formed and it becomes man

How was woman created?

From the rib of Adam to make sure he was a social being and was not lonely

How is the trinity involved in creation?

Father → speaks things into existence

Son → is promised during the fall and is the model for humans

Holy Spirit → the wind, the breath of life

What 3 things happened after Adam and Eve sinned and what does it symbolize?

• they begin to feel shame

• they make clothes

• they hide from God

• this all shows that humans have lost their original holiness and original justice

Original Justice

The state of complete harmony between Adam and Eve and the rest of creation

Original Holiness

The original state of human beings in their full relationship with God, sharing in the divine life in full communion with him

How are original holiness and original justice reflected in Genesis?

Original holiness → is lost when we hide from God, destroys our relationship

Original Justice → is lost when we clothe ourselves and feel shame about our nakedness towards one another

Consequences of original sin

• human nature is wounded

• human solidarity is disrupted

• we are separated from God

What is the actual sin of Adam and Eve?

They ate the apple and disobeyed God

What does the serpent in Genesis 3 represent and what does he do?

Represents Satan, who lies
