Poplulation

The specified group under investigation.

Sample

A subset of the population.

Parameters

Things that describe a population.

Statistics

Tool used to describe a sample.

Descriptive Statistics

Statistics that summarizes and presents data in a meaningful way.

Inferential Statistics

Statistics that makes predictions about a population based on a sample.

Qualitative Data

Data representing words that indicate category.

Quantitative Data

Data representing numbers that indicate amount.

Nominal Data

Type of qualitative data with no order category. (Example: Color)

Ordinal Data

Type of qualitative data with ordered categories. (Example: College Classification, Job Titles)

Discrete Data

Type of quantitative data that consists of whole “countable” numbers (Example: “1, 2, 3, 4, etc…”)

Continuous Data

Type of quantitative data that contains intermediate numbers (Example: Reaction Time)
