CPE
cytopathic effect
What is a CPE?
any observable cellular characteristics that is present in virus-infected cells and which is absent in uninfected cells.
Cell Lysis
CPE, cytolytic infection. (Causes plaque formation on cultured cells. )
Inclusion body formation
Discrete areas in the host cell nucleus or cytoplasm containing viral proteins or particles CPE
Inclusion bodies from rabies virus
negri bodies (forms in neurons)
Syncytium formation
adjacent cells merge into a continuous mass CPE (RSV) (multinucleated cell)
Transformation of cells by oncogenic retrovirus
Transformed cells display
- loss of contact inhibition
- anchorage-independence
- loss of serum-dependence (DONT need serum)
Virus-induced apoptosis
Not necessarily helpful for the virus.
Virus-induced shut off of host cell transcription and or translation.
Suppress the expression of specific cellular genes
