Nitrous oxide
A gaseous analgesic used for pain relief, known by the trade name Entonox.
Analgesic
A type of medication that relieves pain.
CNS depressant
A substance that reduces the activity of the central nervous system.
Indications for nitrous oxide
Situations where nitrous oxide is recommended, such as musculoskeletal pain and active labor.
Contraindications for nitrous oxide
Situations where nitrous oxide should not be used, such as altered level of consciousness or significant COPD.
Pulmonary hypertension
Condition that can be a precaution when administering nitrous oxide due to its cardiac depressant properties.
Self-administered
Method where patients use nitrous oxide themselves until pain relief is achieved.
