Circulatory System
consists of organs and fluids that transport materials across the body
artery/arteries
semi-elastic vessels that transport blood away from the heart
Vein
A type of blood vessel that carries blood back to the heart from all parts of the body.
capillary/capillaries
smallest and most numerous of blood vessels
Pulmonary Circulation
Circult that provides body flow from the heart to the lungs
Systemic Circulation
circult that allows blood to flow from the heart to the rest of the body. excluding the lungs
Plasma
protein rich fluid that carries waste, gases, and nutrients.
Blood Pressure
The force of blood pushing against the walls of the blood vessels.
Aorta
The largest artery in the body; it conducts freshly oxygenated blood from the heart to the tissues.
Superior and Inferior Vena Cava
The two largest veins in the body.
Artierioles
Branch off/Small arteries.
Venules
Small veins.
Right and Left Atrium
The two upper chambers of the heart.
Right and Left Ventricles
The two lower chambers of the heart.
Valves
Is in between each atrium and ventricle to prevent the blood from flowing backwards
Red Blood Cells
Cells that transport oxygen molecules to every cell of the body and they get the color from hemoglobin
White Blood Cells
Cells that fight and destroy germs and illnesses in the body.
Platelets
Blood cells that help our blood to clot.
Hemoglobin
complex protein made up of four protein strands, plus iron-rich, hemegroups
Transport oxygen and carbon dioxide
Disease protection and healing
Regulate body temperature
Functions of the circulatory system
Oxygenated and Deoxygenated blood
2 types of blood
Oxygenated blood
type of blood that contains nutrients and oxygen and found in arteries
Deoxygenated blood
type of blood that is low in oxygen
Blood
it carries the materials throughout the body
Right atrium, Left atrium, Right Ventricle, Left Ventricle
These are the four chambers of heart
Atria
The receiving chambers of the heart, accepting blood from the body and the lungs
Ventricles
the pumping chambers of the heart moving blood to the lungs and into the body
coronary circulation
circuit that provides blood to the tissues of the heart
