Fire Safety
Remove residents from area of danger first! (RESCUE)
After rescuing resident then pull the fire alarm (ALARM)
After alarming close doors to try and contain fires (CONFINE)
Always aim extinguisher at the base of the fire and sweep back and forth (EXTINGUISHER or EVACUATE)

When to use the Heimlich Maneuver?
if they cannot speak begin heimlich,
have someone call for help
stand behind the person, wrap your arms around their waste
make a fist with one hand, place the thumb side of the fist against the abdomen
grasp the first with your other hand
press your fist into the persons abdomen with a quick upward J motion upward thrust,
Repeat until the object is expelled
for pregnant or bariatric patients place arms above stomach between the nipples and thrust forward
How to avoid falls?
keep floors uncluttered
remove throw rug
do not rearrange furniture (maintain routine)
make sure assistive devices are within reach
keep adequate lighting
assist with bathroom assistance promptly
lock brakes when transferring, use gait bells correctly
Additional ways to prevent falls
observe for changes in body movement
observe for signs of weakness
slowly help resident out of bed or chair
allow resident to stand before they start to walk
take frequent breaks
Seizures
do NOT put anything in the patient mouth
do NOT give them any food or drink
move anything out of the ay that may injure them
do not restrain or confine them
if it is a persons first seizure call 911
if the seizure lasts more than 5 minutes call 911
Mechanical Lift
only use these if they ae ordered for your specific patient
typically used for immobile patients
two people are required when using a lift
always lock the lift before use, assure it is fully charged with no rips or tears in the sling
Restraints
MUST be ordered by the doctor (only the doctor)
NEVER use for staff convenience
ONLY use as a last resort
can be dangerous and can lead to injury and death
check patient every 15 minutes and remove after 2 hours
can lead to healthcare worker charged and jail time
Seizure Safety
could be a nervous system issue
during a seizure do not restrict the patient
move items out of the way
the patient will be tired after having a seizure
