volunteering within ps
volunteering at journey to healthcare and the hospital
J2H - spreading info and researching about prominent healthcare topics; this allowed me to improve my independent research skills - needed for PBL and also liaise with many different people; similar to how dentists will liaise with the whole MDT in order to protect patient safety and improve quality healthcare outcomes
hospital volunteering - has been crucial in improving my interpersonal skills when speaking to a variety of different ppl from different backgrounds. As a dentist - the ability to adapt communication, depending on who u are speaking to is critical to ensure that each person feels supported. I saw this on my WEX, when the dentist helped an anxious patient.
what learning style do we use and why is this suited to u
PBL
combining independent learning with working within a team environment
this is similar to how dentists work as independent and group work in the MDT is critical for the effective functioning of dentistry
i have improved my independent learning skills via completing my EPQ project - allowed me to govern my own learning and improve my discipline
working within a team is smth i have worked on during my volunteering and liasing with other group members is very important in order to improve the collaboration of the team - to improve our blogs
PBL also involves applying real life concepts to the situations you study - and these critical thinking skills allow you to become more competent in situations where you may have less knowledge
why liv
collaborative learning core - building up key relationships with the DHT students - mirrored within later practice; the understanding of each others roles is important to maintain quality healthcare outcomes
research focus - the CHOICE trial
early clinical exposure - seeing/shadowing patients within first 12 weeks - then first patients in April
community initiatives - smile squad - importance of community dentistry
stranded on an island - with food n shelter what 3 items and 3 people would u bring
sat phone, boat, fire stuff
amelia, (army) doctor, sailor
describe childs mouth with caries - talk about the impact of it and whats the gov can do to solve issues in childrens oral health
severe tooth decay - describe the location of the decay; formed by bacteria in plaque breaking down the sugars - and the acids break down and demineralise the enamel/dentin - leads to cavities
treated via extractions as the extent of the decay is significant
fillings on less decayed teeth
root canals
impact: - child may have to take time off school to undergo extractions under general anaesthesia; which leads to problems with their cognitive/social development; missing school may also impact their mental health
in a lot of pain - can’t eat certain foods which may lead to malnutrition
disturb sleep
change self image
what can the gov do?
implement fluoridation systems in more areas of the country to remineralise the teeth of children
sugar tax/advertising ban
mobile clinics
incentives for children to see the dentist
make it a legal requirement for children to go to the dentist
list of nhs values - pick which 3 are most important
all values are very important and support a well functioning NHS healthcare system - however the most important are
compassion - Compassion is at the heart of healthcare. It ensures that patients are treated with kindness, empathy, and respect. A compassionate approach improves patient trust, reduces anxiety, and can even lead to better health outcomes. NHS staff are expected to understand patients' needs not just clinically, but emotionally as well. within a dental environment, compassion is critical to ensure that patients feel supported in difficult scenarios - as a mind mentor i have been able to improve this
quality of care - Providing the highest possible standard of care is fundamental to the NHS. This means ensuring safety, effectiveness, and a commitment to continuous improvement. High-quality care leads to better patient outcomes, reduces hospital stays, and enhances public confidence in the NHS. Quality of care is integral within a dental setting, where maintaining trust in the profession will help to allow people to seek support about their dental care - reducing the quantity of preventable diseases that take up NHS resources.
everyone counts - links to the key ethical principal of justice
The NHS is built on the principle of fairness and inclusivity. This value ensures that care is provided based on need, not background, wealth, or status. It promotes equal access to services and reinforces that every individual, whether patient or staff, is valued and respected.
three most important nhs values:
compassion - kindness empathy and communication
everyone counts - link to equality act/justice and then talk abt smile squad at liverpool
working tg for patients - importance of teamwork and maintaining high standards as a team
give evidenve of showing a caring nature
within mind mentoring
speaking to younger children at school who may have mental health struggles and/or difficulties with the learning enviroment
very key to:
provide a listening ear and allow them to tell you about their struggles
ensure u empathise with them - with good verbal and non verbal communication
get them assistance and support that they may need
within lifeguarding in rescue situations its important to be able to support and comfort the victim not only ohysically thru aid, but also emotionally
caring nature is important to increase the level of trust within the profession
“communicate effectively with patients”
“compassion”
“put patients interests first”
who is part of patients care - and what are their roles

dental therapist

time u showed resilience
moving schools or getting dropped from trial in football
what this taught me: importance of dedication and ability to persevere when u dont initially meet ur goals
the ability to evaluate ur perfromance
gain feedback from others in order to improve
set overarching goals in ordee to target performance
this may be needed in dental school in an academically challenging environment - where adapting to new learning styles may be challenging
however - speaking to relevant ppl abt support; maintaining positive mental attitude is very important for this
challenges dentists face and whats the significance of this
physical: being in uncomfortable positions and being bent over - muscular and joint pains from repeated strains are common; to combat this: - use loupes, maintain correct posture and keep an active lifestyle; this could also be detrimental for patients if the dentist is in severe pain that impedes their ability to move+practice; loss of hearing is common and accidentky pricking urself
fear of litigation : this is a normal fear for dentists to have in practice due to the difficulty of balancing patient expectations with safety/and clinical abilities ; patients may sue if they feel as if their needs have not been met; similarly with the high stakes role - dentists may feel immense pressure to perform which could lead to stress; in order to combat this, having an effective complaints procedure would be important and ensuring that informed consent is gained thru educating the patient abt the pros/cons of the treatment
feeling distressed due to the fact that the career is ever-evolving and the clinician may feel overwhelmed by the new discoveries - importance of lifelong learning within the career

big issues with accessing NHS dentistry
less adults in liverpool see a dentist than in other areas of the country
whats ur understanding of the NHS values
NHS values underpin how health professionals practice under the NHS in the UK; not just for doctors/dentists - anyone working for the NHS should have a good understanding of how professionals should function and act
some important NHS values include:
compassion
working together for patients
everyone counts
keeping these values in mind is important when treating patients
where have u shown manual dex
within my volunteering role at my local library - i make weekly displays for the library in order to inform local residents about new cahnges and promote seasonal initiatives - like spring displays and genre promotions
this involved me learning very intricate and specific designs ideas which involved having extremely proficient manual dexterity abilities
also in the last year i decided to learn how to play the piano
i enjoy working with my hands and achieving physical results - which is intrinsically related to dentsitry - wherein you work within a very small region of the mouth - and have controlled movements allows patient safety and the maintainance of quality patient outcomes
how to cut down on costs in practice
look at the demographics/statistics of which procedures are required by patients the most: e.g. fillings the most but implants/dentures much more rare
look at the prices that dentists have to pay for equipment; e.g. things that involve bridgework/ or coordination with dental labs may be more expensive - so cutting down on these could save costs
time/efficiency of procedures —> using alternative materials/methods to carry out dental treatment that may be more economical

also involved contacting professionals trhu different avenues like thru linkedin - which was helpful when contacting dental related alumnae
why would/nt work in the NHS after uni?
no differences in the overall standard of care
obvs need to see what aspects of dentistry i want to branch out into
i think that the values of the NHS and the importance of justice - it would be an industry that i would like to contribute to
