Clinical Psychology
The psychological specialty that provides continuing and comprehensive mental and behavioral health care for individuals and families.
Psychological Disorder
A psychological dysfunction within an individual associated with distress or impairment in functioning.
Abnormality
Deviation from statistical norms, social norms, maladaptive behavior, or causing distress and impairment.
Behavioral Model
Explains abnormal behavior through learning processes, including classical and operant conditioning.
Classical Conditioning
Learning process where a neutral stimulus becomes associated with an unconditioned stimulus to elicit a conditioned response.
Operant Conditioning
A method of learning that occurs through rewards and punishments for behavior.
Biopsychosocial Model
A perspective that explains diseases and symptoms through a combination of biological, social, and psychological factors.
Equifinality
Different risk factors through development may cause similar psychopathology.
Multifinality
Equal risk factors through development may lead to different outcomes—adjustment or maladjustment.
Somatic symptoms
Physical symptoms that can occur in psychological disorders, such as digestive issues, fatigue, and sleep disturbances.
