1. Gilded Era
Characterized by political corruption, growth of cities, immigration, and the rise of industry.
New inventions such as the telephone and electric light bulb improve the standard of living for many Americans.
2. Progressive Era
Attempt to reform corruption of the Gilded Era by social leaders.
Progressive Presidents supported Constitutional amendments and federal laws to improve living conditions and give people move voice in the government
3. Imperialism / The U.S. becomes a World Power
Following the Spanish-American War, the U.S. acquired new overseas territories including:
Cuba
Puerto Rico
the Philippine Islands
During this time, America enforced a foreign policy that sought to protect the countries of the Western Hemisphere from European intervention
4. The Roaring Twenties
As the country returned to its traditional policy of isolation and normalcy, Americans experienced a period of wealth which promoted innovations in the arts and science and improved industry. New ideas challenged traditional beliefs/customs
5. Great Depression and the New Deal
Market crash marked the beginning of high unemployment, poverty, low profits, deflation, plunging farm incomes, and lost opportunities for economic growth and personal advancement. FDR promised a new deal for the American people in response.
6. WWII
Japan's attack on the US after months of negotiation trade issues would eventually force the US to declare war. The mobilization effort of the US government in WWII exceeded that of WWI.
With 2 war fronts, American industry flourished as it provided supplies for the divided military.
WWII brought life back to the US economy, set about social change, and changed the political boundaries of Europe, altering US diplomatic relations.
7. The Cold War
Former allies (U.S. && S.U) became enemies as the growing fear of the worldwide Communist influence put a damper on the euphoria felt after WWII. The Cold War heightened military spending and led to a growth of technological innovations, but also creating paranoia that Communism would take over the world and led to an aggressive US foreign policy.
8. Civil Rights Era
While the Civil War brought about an end to slavery in America, it did not mean immediate equality to all Americans.
This led to many groups to demand a change. This demand for change would eventually cover all segments of the population. Some choose a more direct militant stance while others sought a peaceful solution, but all groups worked to create a more equal America.
9. Modern Era
The US encountered A Petroleum Embargo from OPEC which led toa a search for renewable energy sources. This led to the creation of wind and solar energy. President Nixon and Reagon will increase the cynicism toward elected official with the Watergate Scandal the Iran-Contra Affair.
10. New Millennium
The War on Terror begins after 9/11 and the U.S. attacks Afghanistan.
The world will also experience mass cultural diffusion through the use of the Internet and Robotics. In 2008, America elects the first minority president of the US.
